How CBD can help fight Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a major cause of neurological disability among young where the immune system starts to attack the central nervous system (CNS). White blood cells infiltrate the myelin surrounding neurons, destroying the sheath that protects and insulate them. Because myelin is essential for the nervous system to function properly, it is this demyelination along with inflammation, that cause the physical and cognitive impairments in MS sufferers.

Common symptoms of MS include:

  • Fatigue

  • Vision problems

  • Numbness & tingling

  • Muscle spasms, stiffness and weakness

  • Mobility problems

  • Pain

  • Cognitive impairments such as problems with thinking, learning and planning

  • Depression and anxiety

  • Speech and swallowing difficulties

  • Bowel and bladder problems

How CBD works in cases of Multiple Sclerosis ?

Cannabidiol (CBD), unlike THC available in high-doses in medical marijuana, does not induce any psychoactive effects and also carries therapeutic effects and is believed to be able to help patients with a number of different medical conditions. The benefits of CBD in helping people with MS have not been shown in any clinical trials to date, whether in the United States or elsewhere. We recommend that you seek the advice of a medical doctor or health professional when trying to leverage CBD products for your MS symptoms. However, scientists believe that CBD can help patients with Multiple Sclerosis in the following ways:

1) Its ability to control muscle tone

Several studies found that cannabinoids are effective in controlling muscle tone, which can greatly improve the severity and frequency of spasticity and tremors as well as improve bladder function.

2) Its ability to relieve pain

MS sufferers suffering from chronic pain can benefit from the analgesic properties of CBD by mediating the function of glycine receptors, regulating the way in which pain receptors signals the spinal cord and brain.

3) Its ability to reduce inflammation

Because the immune system is in overdrive in MS sufferers, one of the biggest issues they have to deal with is inflammation in the brain. CBD is a powerful anti-inflammatory active compound, along with helping to regulate the immune system.

4) Its ability to protect and regenerate neurons

Cannabinoids have been shown to protect neurons and actually help with neurogenesis, the creation of new neural cells.

5) Its ability to reduce anxiety and depression

30.5% of MS patients struggle with depression, and about 22% with anxiety. CBD anti-inflammatory has been shown to directly influence the limbic system – the so-called “emotional” brain - reducing stress and depressions.

Recommended CBD product types and dosage for multiple sclerosis

It's important to use a high-quality product and do so regularly, when using CBD for a condition such as Multiple Sclerosis. The following mode of administration are typically recommended:

  • Sublingual Treatments & Ingestibles

For daily prevention and maintenance we recommend using a full-spectrum or broad-spectrum CBD drops, tincture or gel cap. This will allow for a slow onset of action that lasts throughout the day.

  • Vaping & Smoking

For acute flare-up of tremors, spasticity or pain, vaping CBD or smoking CBD rich flowers can provide almost immediate relief due to its fast onset of action.

CBD for Multiple Sclerosis is very personal and dependent on the type and severity of symptoms. The general rule of thumb for CBD dosage is 25 mg of CBD, taken twice daily. If results from this amount are not felt, the serving size can be increased by another 25 mg every 3-4 weeks until you the optimal dosage is found.
