CBD for Arthritis and Arthrosis

Arthritis refers to any inflammation in the joints, or the tissues surrounding joints and other connective tissues. Arthritis is characterized as a rheumatic condition inducing a range of symptoms which impair a person's ability to perform everyday tasks. Rheumatic conditions such as arthritis tend to involve pain, aching, stiffness, and swelling in and around one or more joints.

The two most common types of arthritis are

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) Is an autoimmune disease in which a person's immune system attacks their joints, causing inflammation. RA commonly affects the hands and feet and leads to painful, swollen, and stiff joints.

The symptoms of arthritis vary from one type to another.

  • Joint pain and stiffness are by far the most common ones

  • Swelling in your joints

  • Redness of the skin around affected joints

  • Reduced range of motion in affected joints

Osteoarthritis or Arthrosis

Osteoarthritis (OA) Is a degenerative disease that affects joint cartilage and bones, causing pain and stiffness. It often also affects the hip, knee, and thumb joints. Arthrosis is another name used to describe OA.

The most common symptoms of arthrosis in particular (or osteoarthritis, OA) include:

  • Joint pain and joint stiffness

  • Tenderness around affected joints

  • Reduced flexibility in affected joints

  • Bone-to-bone grating or rubbing

  • Bone spurs, or small bits of extra bone growth that may develop around affected joints

How CBD works for arthritis and arthrosis ?

Treatment for arthritis aims to control pain and inflammation, minimize joint damage, and improve or maintain function and quality of life. While there are several treatment plans for arthritis, the primary objective sought by therapists is often pain relief. Most commonly, doctors will prescribe treatments for pain management, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).While scientific research is still at its inception, CBD extracts from medical marijuana plants or hemp plants, could offer a viable alternative or complement to relieve arthritis pain. It is important to note that at the time of writing, no clinical trials have been undertaken to show the benefits of CBD in cases of arthritis and arthrosis. As such, no CBD drugs has yet received FDA approval (or approval from any other drug agencies) in the US, or elsewhere in the world for this indication. Scientists believe CBD could help people with arthritis and arthrosis through:

1) Its effect on the endocannabinoid system (ECS)

Peripheral cannabinoid receptors plays an important role in the body’s ability to inhibit and control pain due to its ability to suppress pain processing through the activation of the CB1 & CB2 receptors. In addition, CBD also restores the balance of endocannabinoids such as anandamide and FAAH which are thought to play a role in blocking pain signals.

2) Its ability to reduce neuropathic pain

Glycine receptors (GlyRs) play an important role in the sensations of pain. CBD has been shown to significantly reduce chronic pain by suppressing α3 GlyRs receptors.

3) Its ability to reduce inflammation by inhibiting prostaglandin

CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties are mainly due to its ability to decrease the activity of the enzyme cyclooxygenase in a similar way as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like Ibuprofen and Naproxen.

4) Its ability to reduce immune response and oxidative stress

Researchers theorize that CBD can also reduce the associated oxidative stress of inflammation by exerting an immunosuppressive effect.

CBD product types and dosage for arthritis and arthrosis

It's important to use a high-quality product and do so regularly, when using CBD for a condition such as arthritis. There are a number of cannabis-derived products that might help with it:

  • Sublingual Treatments & Ingestibles

For daily prevention and maintenance we recommend using a full-spectrum or broad-spectrum hemp oil, tincture or gel cap. This will allow for a slow onset of action that lasts throughout the day.

  • Vaping & Smoking

For acute flare-up of arthritic pain and inflammation, vaping CBD or smoking CBD-rich cannabis flowers can provide almost immediate relief due to its fast onset of action.

  • Topical Treatments

For localized pain and inflammation, a topical such as a cream or lotion to deliver CBD directly to the affected area is recommended.

CBD for Arthritis is very personal and dependent on the type and severity of symptoms. The general rule of thumb for CBD dosage is 25 mg of CBD, taken twice daily. If results from this amount are not felt, the serving size can be increased by another 25 mg every 3-4 weeks until you the optimal dosage is found.
